Mark's Remarks - 1st Quarter 2007
The Art of Grouping
|
|
Hello Everyone and Happy New Year!! Can you believe it's 2007?? We have an exciting and educational year ahead here at Mark's Remarks learning new ideas and designs. I invite you as a reader to share with me your ideas and comments so we may have a wonderful educational and learning experience together.
In this installment, I'm going to discuss the concept of grouping for maximum impact.
"Grouping: the placing of identical materials within a specific limited area, with each material maintaining its individual identity. Some amount of SPACE typically exists between each separate group." (Quoted from, "The AIFD GUIDE TO Floral Design Terms, Techniques, and Traditions", The American Institute of Floral Designers, 720 Light St., Baltimore, MD 21230)

Groupings can be in all shapes and sizes, and as stated in the quote above, with "some amount of SPACE." So, whether linear, a small grouping or a centerpiece style, grouping can be effective in several ways and more ways than I have shown in this column. The impact that grouping has, and the "punch" delivered, is well worth the design.

Here I am using many red Anthuriums cut short but layered to create this subtle yet effective centerpiece style arrangement, which is accented with a couple stands of variegated foliage.

Spring is just a few months away so with this arrangement, I tribute to Mother Nature, Singing Birds. In this arrangement I choose a ceramic container and top my wet foam with sheet moss. I then cut my birds to the same length and looped one piece of foliage to create movement and another piece for a complement. Very simple for the beginner designer but a wonderful impact with grouping.

In this arrangement we reach for the sky with beautiful Ginger. Here I have used ginger in a staggered movement yet conveying the grouping effect. The foliage is pieces of an areca frond, which has been removed from the stem and placed around the wet foam to create a stunning twist on foliage treatment. This has been designed in a cylindrical crock and tied with a length of twine to give it more a down to earth look.

And there you have it GROUPINGS... a wonderful way to design with IMPACT!
Wishing you all a wonderful and successful 2007
Keep Blooming!
