It's All About COLOR!

Welcome back to Mark's Remarks! My name is Mark S. Massie, AIFD. You can learn more about me and view other photos of my work here.

I've tossed and turned about a theme for this month's update, then it hit me in one word: COLOR!

Throughout the years, color has developed many meanings, from the spiritual to the relaxed. Its diverse properties evoke healing in body, mind and spirit, and create spinning vortexes of energy to promote health and calm throughout the body. I develop these ideas more fully in a class I teach on color. Entitled, "Healing by Design," this class allows the designer to focus upon the true principles of color, and the role color plays when promoting its' properties into the super conscious. To learn more about "Healing by Design," please contact me for further details or visit my website.

This month, I'm designing with products brought together from two great companies. The Smithers-Oasis Company and Tayama have combined quality products and loyalty that their clients have appreciated through the years. Now, thanks to the gracious teaming of these two companies, it's a real joy for me to demonstrate the vibrant colors of Smithers-Oasis rainbow foam and hard goods, coupled with the quality and freshness of Tayama's' botanicals!.

Arrangement

In my first design I used a plastic container from the Smithers-Oasis "Spirit" collection and a rainbow foam disc of matching color. Here I used birds of paradise to create my line, then created a shadow with the lycopodium. I used 3 Ti leaves, one feathered and the other two tapered down as a foliage treatment. The bent stems are remnants of the lion's head papyrus I used in another arrangement you'll read about later. My focal point is the shampoo ginger I chose to sink in the rainbow foam. Next, I sprayed sedum black to create a semi collar. I then used 2 matching anthuriums to recapitulate the birds of paradise.
