The Tayama Greenhouses Story

Tayama's Growth Continues

Tayama Wholesale launched a new, second location in November 1989, at the grand opening of the San Diego International Floral Trade Center in Carlsbad, California. Kregh Tatebe moved from Los Angeles to Carlsbad to run the neTayama Wholesale's Carlsbad Locationw operation. Glenn Sakurai then became manager of the Los Angeles store.

Tayama is a third generation family business, solely owned by the Joe Kimura family. Joe joined his father-in-law Fred in 1953, bought the business in 1974, and remains quite active today. Joe's son Michael, together with Joe's sons-in-law Gary Young and Glenn Sakurai, and "adopted sons" Kregh Tatebe and Todd Kawasaki, manage Tayama's Joe Kimura in the Orchid Greenhouseday-to-day operations. Philip "Chanh" Kwok, a Tayama employee since 1983, is our Office and Accounting Manager.

Today, Tayama is the largest grower of cut orchid flowers in Southern California. Since 1961, Tayama has grown Cattleya, Phalaenopsis and Cymbidium orchids in our Encinitas greenhouses, as well as many specialty orchids and other exotic plants.
