Tamie's Tips - June 2001

Designing Florals for a Luau

Tamie KimuraSummer means outdoor parties, and no outdoor party is more festive than a luau. This month's tips provide ideas and inspiration for your own luau floral designs.

Tamie Kimura and Dorothy TurnerThis month's tips features the work of my former retail florist partner, Dorothy Turner. Dorothy and I started our retail flower business in the early 1970's, working out of the back office at Tayama/Encinitas. Our initial focus was weddings and special events, but as our business grew, we both branched out into our own retail flower ventures. Dorothy became the owner of Encinitas Flower Shop, and I owned Cardiff-by-the-Sea Florist. Though we both have long since retired, we still take special interest in today's floral designs. This month marks the 30th anniversary of "Tamie and Turner!"

Large Luau Arrangement This arrangement, as well as the one below, are made large to emphasize size, but can be made almost any size. These arrangements are suitable for hotel entrances to corporate luau events. These arrangements can be made in advance, since all the flowers are long-lasting.

This large arrangement, like the one above, is showy, and actually can be made with a minimum of flowers.

Small Luau Arrangement
These two smaller arrangements can be enlarged by increasing the amount of flowers.

These arrangements will work well on a luau buffet table or for use as table displays.

Gardenia table arrangements The exotic fragrance of gardenias can be used to make simple table arrangements such as those shown at left. Quick and easy, you get a lot of bang for the buck with speed and economy.
Luau arrangements and leis
Luaus provide an opportunity to really flex your design skills. And remember, no luau is complete without leis. Tayama has a wide variety of leis and available all summer long. Leis are extremely popular, and can be worn with any style of dress for a tropical flair.

Happy Feasting, and aloha!
