The Right Way to Use Orchids
in a Floral Arrangement

Orchids are an elegant and unusual accent to any floral design. Conditioned properly before inserting into an arrangement, orchids have a shelf life of seven days or more. Yet arrangements using orchids are uncommon. Why is this? Many florists, even experienced ones, don't know the secret to making orchid arrangements last. So, our tip of the month for September...

Don't place orchid stems directly into OASIS floral foam; use Water Pic Tubes instead.

Orchid stems clog quite easily, and orchids placed directly in floral foam don't last long. Therefore, it is important to have the freshly cut stem placed directly in water. How do you do that using floral foam? With a Water Pic tube.

Water Pic tubes are Water pics come in assorted sizesavailable at most florist supply stores. They are inexpensive, versatile and quite easy to use. I use the Aquapic brand of tubes, but there are several companies that manufacture tubes. Have several different sizes on hand for easy of arranging and flexibility. Green wood pics are also a great way to extend the life of orchid stems.

Floral foam glued to containerI prep a container by gluing dry floral foam to a dry container. Once the glue has bonded, you then soak the foam before inserting the floral materials.

I chose a minimalist approach for the foliage. For this arrangement, I used a monstera leaf. The monstera's large width and low height cover the oasis and won't interfere with the design Arrangement in progresslines of the orchid stems. I added some fern here to add lines and depth, as well as to conceal the foam and tubes. The Japhet stem was used here because it is plentiful and economical during summer, but you can use any type of orchid stem. The water pic provides the proper nourishment for the orchid and also secures it quite nicely into the floral foam.

This type of arrangement can be made quite inexpensively through the use of fewer flowers and less costly containers, or can be upgraded with higher quality containers and additional flowers.

No matter what the budget, this arrangement is elegant and long-lasting. Finished ArrangementSimple to assemble, it is appropriate in many settings, from hospitals, reception desks, and corporate board rooms. We recommend including a note to your customer, informing them that the orchids are in water tubes, which should be checked every few days to maintain the proper water level.
